Condit Elementary School

Houston ISD

Houston, TX

Pre-K - 12

Condit Elementary is a two-story replacement school in Bellaire, Texas. Houston ISD brought together, parents, current teachers and Condit administrators, along with Bellaire community members to form the Project Advisory Team (PAT). VLK Architects met extensively with the PAT to develop the design, often meeting twice a month to present the latest progress. Early on in the design process, VLK along with Houston ISD organized a design charrette, to engage the PAT in a two-day work session to set the vision for the project. VLK brought several concepts to the charrette for the PAT to discuss. Based on comments from the PAT, VLK further refined the concepts. By the end of the two-day charrette, the vision of the design was set. “Education is the ribbon that ties the community together” serves as the guiding force for the design of the building. Classrooms are organized and threaded, like a ribbon, through the learning commons, which serves as the main hub for the school. The ribbon of classrooms is organized to allow each grade to be grouped into a “pod” with their own collaboration space, which is connected to the learning commons. Classrooms can be opened to engage the collaboration space and the learning commons.
