Walnut Bend Elementary School
This LEED® certified school was a case study for incorporating LEED into all new Houston ISD construction projects. The school is designed to provide students and teachers with assorted teaching tools and classroom amenities that encourage and support learning. The design incorporated the school’s mascot, the Eagles, into the design. Working with staff, students researched the animal; these research facts, poems, quotes, etc. were then incorporated into a terrazzo floor with metal letters. Teaching tools in the building include the benefits of sustainable design elements and the “man and nature” built environment. The building was selected to reflect nature such as the terrazzo floor colored to match the pine needles of the forest floor. The school also features hands-on learning spaces such as a pond for aquatic life studies and a nature center.
