The design concept ties Half Step to the architectural aesthetic of Rainey Street National Historic District’s quirky vibrance. The project adapted an existing single-story house for re-use as a cocktail bar within this former residential neighborhood located near Austin’s downtown that has become one of the city’s most popular entertainment districts. Re-using vintage elements of the building’s past emphasizes the architectural legacy of the original dwelling. Efficiently and cleverly programmed, the design team created bar service areas both inside and along the front porch to ensure good flow, as well a private room for exclusive gatherings. In addition, a separate service structure on the grounds provides space for on-site manufacturing of ice.
