This renovation exemplifies the impact of adaptive re-use for a historic decommissioned World War I Army Air Base in South Austin to serve as a walk-able mixed-use destination. Originally built in 1918, the campus has evolved into a broad spectrum of individual structures designed for work and play. Across campus, construction types vary from wood frame and load bearing masonry to pre-engineered metal structures. The design solution provides outdoor performance venues and gathering spaces to host events and exhibitions. New infill facilitates a more contiguous pedestrian flow throughout the development. This fluidity of indoor and outdoor space provides a flexible context for a wide variety of uses. The end-product established an innovative new cornerstone anchoring the resurgent South Austin/Congress Avenue corridor.
