University of North Texas Health Science Center Central Services

The University of North Texas Health Science Center (UNT HSC) found that a physical separation of two divisions was causing an operational rift between Central Services & Operations and Facilities Management. The challenge to VLK was to solve an inefficient building organization and in doing so, to mend the detachment. VLK used its diagnostic programming approach VLK | ANALYTICS to quantitatively study employees work patterns and proximity needs. With that grounding in data, VLK then engaged the two divisions’ teams with VLK | LAUNCH® to capture stakeholders’ voices in a collaborative process that informed conceptual design. These processes guided decisions including space planning, finishes, and mechanical and electrical systems. The new design physically connects the two buildings through a makerspace with tiered seating that doubles as a full staff gathering space. Building organization allows functional relationships to grow and workflows to flourish among the two teams. Shops, including wood, print, paint, and 3D printing were designed to be open for use by UNT HSC faculty and students as a hub of creative energy. While exterior modifications included a new, welcoming front entrance as a symbol of the harmony to found inside.
