On Wednesday, December 17, VLK joined Denton ISD for the topping out of the district’s newest high school. Denton ISD students, staff, and community members gathered to sign their names on the final steel beam before hoisting it in place, marking the completion of structural steel on the project.

The district’s fifth high school is located along the rapidly developing U.S. 380 corridor, the fastest-growing area of Denton ISD. Designed to support this growth, the new high school has a capacity of a 5A or larger designation and prioritizes visibility, supervision, and student safety.

“We are especially grateful to Denton ISD, a district we have had the privilege of serving for more than 20 years across numerous bond programs and transformative educational projects,” said Marty Sims, Principal at VLK. “Denton High School #5 is more than a building—it’s an investment in the future of thousands of students who will learn, collaborate, compete, perform, and discover their passions here.”

The main building will be a 484,000 sf, with spaces supporting robust academic, fine arts, and athletics programs that are clearly defined while remaining interconnected. The focal point of the facility is a three-story atrium that serves as the main entry point for the school. A 750-seat proscenium theater, designed to accommodate a professional fly system and stage wings, anchors the fine arts wing while seamlessly integrating into the overall facility. The school also supports athletics and student life through a full athletics complex, including a 2,100-seat competition gymnasium and outdoor competition and practice fields. Together, these features support the district’s projected growth while providing a comprehensive environment for students and staff to thrive.

Funded by the 2023 Bond, the new school is a part of Denton ISD’s recent expansion, following the opening of Sandbrock Ranch Elementary School and Cheek Middle School. High School No. 5 is scheduled to open for the 2027-2028 school year.
