CFB ISD Perry Middle School
This project consisted of additions and comprehensive renovations to this occupied site school. The renovations included a complete reconfiguration of the interior to create a cohesive neighborhood effect that creates grade-level separation and provides collaborative environments for all students. The new space includes direct access to outdoor learning opportunities, as well as a variety of spaces and furniture for small group study, or large group gatherings. This new design provides the students at Perry Middle School with a learning environment that creates equity across the district’s middle schools.
VLK worked with the district to create a comprehensive visual story for the campus. This included collecting the history of the school, researching current artifacts and elements to be preserved, and studying its rich culture. We started by leveraging the school’s mascot (the eagle) and integrated it into everyday life for the students. While a simple solution to encourage school spirit would be to apply the mascot in multiple areas around campus, our team wanted to go further. VLK studied the life stages of an eagle from an eaglet to a full-grown eagle, and the changes in habitat and routine that the eagle would experience as it grew.
Established in 1915 as the community’s first school building, fond memories and legacy are alive through visual storytelling, shared community vision, and historical showcasing. Experiences to reimagine identity, foster school spirit, and convey educational goals through the renovated environment cultivate a renewed sense of belonging and purpose for users and the Eagle community.
Crafted for the adolescent student, the design of the learning environment is uniquely tailored to align with intended student experiences while nurturing young learners’ social and emotional growth. Integrating a tapestry of socially safe and supportive spaces fosters a collaborative, age-appropriate, and nurturing village design. Reimagining a safe haven for the unique emotions associated with the middle school transition was the vision driving the integration of innovative design concepts.
Reimagined adjacencies offer an open feel, enabling natural transitions between areas for teachers and students as the school layout moves from flexible space to classroom. Modernized, future-adaptive spaces inspire an evolution of instruction and promote teacher efficacy.
