Celebrating the New Walnut Creek Elementary School

Azle, Texas – On August 8th, representatives from VLK Architects gathered with administrators, staff, and community members to celebrate the ribbon cutting ceremony and open house of the new Walnut Creek Elementary School in Azle ISD. As a part of their 2016 bond, construction of this school began in June of 2017 and students will fill the halls for the 2018-2019 school year beginning next week. Other Azle ISD campuses opening next week are the new Azle Elementary School and the renovated Silver Creek Elementary.

The new Walnut Creek Elementary will be home to 690 students. The two-story, 82,972 sf building is set on the southeast corner of the Azle High School lot. To create continuity in the Azle community, the new school’s exterior incorporates many of the same design features and materials as the neighboring Azle High School.

Walnut Creek Elementary features classrooms for Pre-K through 4th grade, maker spaces, collaboration spaces, as well as STEAM specific learning areas. The new facility also contains a large learning commons area on both floors, replacing the traditional library design. This campus is an ideal learning environment for next generation instruction and STEM based subjects.

“Azle ISD is focused on student success and Walnut Creek has been innovating better ways to provide teaching and learning,” said VLK Principal, Clinton Schiver. “I am excited to be a part of the project that now provides them an environment that enables their innovation and sets a solid foundation for future student success.”

Azle ISD and VLK Architects will soon begin repurposing the old Walnut Creek campus to become the new home of Azle’s Hornet Academy and District Alternative Education Program.
