Sherman High School Wins Fort Worth AIA Merit Award

The Fort Worth Chapter of the American Institute of Architects announced the winners of their 2022 Excellence in Architecture Design and Studio Annual Awards on October 12. VLK Architects received the Merit Award for the design of Sherman High School for Sherman ISD.

Each year AIA Fort Worth’s jury of notable, regional architects collaborates to review the various exceptional architectural, urban design, and unbuilt projects submitted by chapter members. The 2022 Jury included Carol Ross Barney of Ross Barney Architects, Candid Rogers of Candid Works, and Scott Magic of Magic Architecture.

The purpose of the awards program is to encourage and recognize distinguished architectural achievement and to honor the architects, clients, and consultants who work together to improve the built environment and for their role in shaping quality of life through design excellence. The jury determines each winner based on design, technical ability, and environmental and social impact. Winning projects span a variety of sizes, types, designers, and clients.

“The people of Sherman ISD had a vision of reestablishing themselves as leaders in industry on a global stage.” said VLK Principal, Clinton Schiver. “That this vision could be achieved through an investment in the children of their community by providing them a world class learning environment. It has been my honor and privilege to be a part of this project that delivered the first step in this vision.”

Sherman High School was the sole educational facility to receive an award in 2022. The vision for the design of this replacement high school was connection and unity, as devised by district leadership, students, and the community in a multi-day collaboration process called VLK | LAUNCH®. The campus design embraces the community’s vision for the future of Sherman as a global leader across multiple industries. The school provides a highly engaging learning environment with a variety of scales and space types, from the massive student courtyard to small group huddle spaces. Students at Sherman High School are provided agency in where and how they learn, increasing their self-worth, and professional skillsets like time management and collaboration.

“Our high school facility is truly a reflection of our community that was the product of a strong relationship with our masterful design partners at VLK Architects,” said Dr. Tyson Bennett, Sherman ISD Superintendent.

Planning for the new 500,000sf high school began in summer of 2017 when the Building Bearcats Facility Planning Committee began to identify facility needs for the district and the school officially opened to students in fall of 2020.
