VLK Architects and the City of Garland Break Ground on the New West Garland Library

On Saturday, July 22, 2023, VLK Architects joined the City of Garland for the groundbreaking ceremony of the new West Garland Library. The event was held at Hollabaugh Park, adjacent to the Harris Hollabaugh Recreation Center off Walnut Street in West Garland. Notable community officials were in attendance including the Mayor of Garland, Scott LeMay, and District 6 Councilperson, Carissa Dutton. Dutton opened the ceremony recalling the importance of the facility to the community and City of Garland staff were invited to turn dirt for the groundbreaking.

“The groundbreaking celebration for the new West Garland Library represents an important milestone for the community,” said Chris Laack, Principal | VLK Architects. “This new facility will serve as the heart of its community where residents both young and old will enjoy for many years to follow.”

This project is a bold and modern replacement to the current small branch facility. The 18,800sf design incorporates unique and striking features while complementing and harmonizing with the neighboring rec center. Dynamic roofs, colored glass facades, and contemporary forms represent a powerful statement about the community and its place and importance in the City of Garland. The primary entry into the library is through the promenade – a central spine that connects staff and service spaces, study rooms, adult, youth and children’s collections, meeting rooms, and restrooms. The promenade and collection of spaces lead to protected outdoor areas to serve library, recreation center, and park functions. The outdoor spaces will connect with a unifying outdoor art plaza designed to focus on the diverse cultures which exemplify West Garland.
