VLK Architects Celebrates Campbell Elementary School Groundbreaking
Houston, TX – On April 19, VLK Architects and Clear Creek ISD (CCISD) proudly announced the groundbreaking of the district’s 27th elementary school, Campbell Elementary. The school’s namesake, Florence McMahan Campbell, was a lifelong educator and served Clear Creek ISD as a teacher for many years. Her son, Travis, donated the land on League City Parkway and Windemere Road to the district in his mother’s name.
VLK Architects Principal Melissa Fleming and the architectural team from VLK joined the Board of Trustees, district administrators, and community members as they broke ground on the 127,300 square foot school. “We are honored to design a school named after a veteran educator who devoted her career to the children of this community,” said Fleming. “This is a wonderful way for Clear Creek ISD to celebrate Florence Campbell’s legacy.”
Funded by Clear Creek ISD’s bond referendum approved by voters in 2017, this new facility was designed to promote creative spaces for each grade level. The classrooms are organized around collaborative instructional areas offering maximum flexibility in both layout and technology to provide multiple learning opportunities. Areas for fine arts, science, technology, athletics, as well as a library, administrative offices, and other support areas are included in the design.
Clear Creek ISD Superintendent Dr. Greg Smith thanked VLK Architects for their creativity during the design process and their attention to how the school environment impacts teaching and learning. Smith also said he was excited to break ground on the new school. “I am confident Campbell Elementary will provide a variety of educational experiences for our students as well as encourage them as they chart new pathways for learning.”
Other unique features of the design include a dedicated building for the Galveston-Brazoria Cooperative for the Hearing Impaired and an expanded stacking lane enabling vehicles to move off the main thoroughfares around the school. Campbell Elementary School is scheduled to open for the fall of 2019.
