VLK Architects and PBTISD Celebrate Groundbreaking on a New Pre-K through First Grade Campus

(Pecos, Texas) – On April 20, 2022, VLK Architects joined Pecos-Barstow-Toyah ISD to celebrate breaking ground on the construction of a new campus for pre-K through First Grade. The school is being built as a part of the bond passed in 2021.

The design of the campus started in June 2021 led by VLK’s collaborative approach to gathering stakeholder perspectives called VLK | LAUNCH®, which included community members, administration, teachers, coaches, and students.

“In designing the building, something the cohort really wanted to emphasize was the library being the center of everything,” said PBTISD Chief Academic Officer Dr. Karen Matt. “It will encourage literacy to all students and give them the courage to explore the world through reading.”

In addition, the design features focused learning nooks, music, and art rooms, as well as a 1,000-foot drop-off lane to ease traffic. A part of the district’s rich history, the pillar entryway of Pecos Elementary will be extracted to provide an entrance to the main hallway of the new campus.

“VLK Architects is honored to partner with PBTISD on this project,” said Monika Castillo, AIA, Principal of VLK Architects. “We understand how much this new campus will mean to the community.”

The campus is scheduled to be complete by August 2023.
