VLK Architects Joins PBTISD for Second Ribbon Cutting This Month, Celebrating Zavala Elementary School

(Pecos, Texas) – On Thursday, September 21, 2023, VLK Architects joined Pecos-Barstow-Toyah Independent School District (PBTISD) for their second ribbon cutting this month celebrating the ribbon-cutting and community grand opening of Zavala Elementary School. The new campus is home to second through fifth grade students, consolidating the district into four operational campuses.

“VLK is honored to participate in the opening of Zavala Elementary School,” said Monika Castillo, Principal at VLK Architects. “We appreciate the opportunity to be working with Pecos-Barstow-Toyah ISD and its community to deliver a facility that is focused on student education and experience for both students and staff. This is a tremendous milestone for the district and its community.”

The 133,000 sf facility features a two-story library at the heart of the campus including teaching spaces and reading nooks on each level. The school will also include a music room with direct access to a performance stage and STEM (Science, Technology, English, Math) labs with access to an outdoor patio and science balcony.

“Our journey towards excellence continues with the opening of Zavala Elementary,” said Brent Jaco, Superintendent of PBTISD. “Thank you, Pecos, Texas, for your unwavering support, and here’s to Zavala Elementary and the bright future it holds for our students.”

Funding for the new Zavala Elementary School was included in the May 2021 bond, and the new campus opened its doors to students for the start of the 2023-2024 school year.
